Why “informed” consent?

Touching a patient without consent is assault. To give consent a patient must understand the context, the potential benefit, the potential risks, and alternatives and their risks and benefits. They must be able to have questions answered. You must be assured that they have understood you by employing teach back. Then, and only then, they can make the call. The reading and assignment below are designed to make you think about patient’s autonomy.
